The Album (stylized in all caps) is the debut Korean-language studio album (second overall) by South Korean girl group Blackpink, released on October 2, 2020, by YG Entertainment and Interscope. It is the group's first full-length work since their debut in 2016. For the album, Blackpink recorded over ten new songs and worked with a variety of producers, including Teddy, Tommy Brown, R. Tee, Steven Franks and 24. Eight songs made the final track list, including two collaborations: "Ice Cream" with Selena Gomez, and "Bet You Wanna" featuring Cardi B. The album explores the group's mature side through the themes of love and the complexities of growing up. Musically, The Album utilizes pop, R&B, hip hop, EDM and trap elements.
"Who Says" is a song performed by American band Selena Gomez & the Scene. Priscilla Renea wrote the song with Emanuel Kiriakou, who produced the track. The song was released in March 2011, as the lead single from the band's third album, When the Sun Goes Down (2011). According to Gomez, the song was intended to inspire people, and fire back at the "haters", particularly those involved in cyberbullying. "Who Says" marks a distinct departure in sound for the band, as it has an acoustic and organic feel, compared to their dance-pop and club-oriented previous singles.
"Back to You" is a song recorded by American singer Selena Gomez. It was written by Gomez, Parrish Warrington, Diederik Van Elsas, Amy Allen, and Micah Premnath. The production was handled by Ian Kirkpatrick and Trackside. The track was released on May 10, 2018, as the lead single from the second season soundtrack of 13 Reasons Why, a TV adaptation of the eponymous book.
"The Heart Wants What It Wants" is a song by American singer Selena Gomez. It was released on November 6, 2014, through Hollywood Records, as the lead and only single from her compilation album For You (2014). The song was written by Gomez, Antonina Armato, David Jost and Tim James. Armato and James, who collectively form the production duo Rock Mafia, also produced the song. A mid-tempo pop and R&B track with a minimal electropop beat, its accompanying music video was premiered on November 6, 2014, alongside the premiere of the song itself. "Same Old Love" is a song recorded by American singer Selena Gomez, who included it on and released it from her second studio album Revival (2015). Written by Beyoncé, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, and production duo Stargate, it was initially a classic rhythm and blues song until Babyface changed the arrangement and chords. "Formation" is a song recorded by American singer Beyoncé for her sixth studio album Lemonade (2016). It was written by Rae Sremmurd, Beyoncé, Asheton Hogan, and Mike Will Made It and produced by the latter three. It served as the album's lead single, released on February 6, 2016 through Parkwood Entertainment to critical acclaim. In order to promote the song, Beyoncé performed it during her guest appearance at the Super Bowl 50 halftime show the day after its premiere.
"Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" (Korean: 뚜두뚜두, stylized in all caps) is a song recorded in Korean and Japanese by South Korean girl group Blackpink. It was released on June 15, 2018 through YG Entertainment, in conjunction with the release of the group's debut Korean-language extended play, Square Up. The Japanese version of the single was released through YGEX on August 22, 2018 and was distributed in three physical formats. Described as an pop rap song infused with bubblegum pop and trap beats, the track was written by YG collaborator Teddy Park, whilst production and composition was handled by Park, 24, Bekuh Boom and R.Tee.
"Stay" is a song by South Korean girl group Blackpink, released by YG Entertainment on November 1, 2016, together with "Playing with Fire", as a digital single titled Square Two. The song peaked at number 10 on the Gaon Digital Chart.
"As If It's Your Last" (Korean: 마지막처럼; RR: Majimagcheoleom) is a song recorded by South Korean girl group Blackpink, released on June 22, 2017 by YG Entertainment. It was written by Teddy Park, Brother Su, Choice37, Future Bounce, Lydia Paek and produced by Teddy Park. Musically, it has been described as a synth-pop, house, reggae and moombahton song, whose lyrics talk about finding and losing love. Commercially, the song debuted atop the Billboard World Digital Songs chart, at number two on K-pop Hot 100 and at number 3 on the Gaon Digital Chart. The single sold more than 2.5 million copies in South Korea.
"Hallucinate" is a song by English singer Dua Lipa from her second studio album Future Nostalgia (2020). The song was written by Lipa alongside Frances and SG Lewis, with the latter of the three handling the production with Stuart Price. It was serviced to contemporary hit radio formats in the United Kingdom on 17 July 2020 as the album's fourth single. The song is a disco-house track with dance-pop, electro swing, psychedelic, and synth-pop elements. Lyrically, the song describes how crazy love can make one feel. Music critics complimented the energy and aesthetic of the song, while other had mixed opinions on its disco and house sounds.
"Levitating" is a song by English singer Dua Lipa from her second studio album, Future Nostalgia (2020). The song was written by Lipa, Clarence Coffee Jr., Sarah Hudson and Stephen Kozmeniuk, with the image of Mike Myers in Austin Powers in mind. The production was handled by Koz and Stuart Price, and stemmed from a Roland VP-330 synthesizer sample played by the former. The song is an electro-disco and nu-disco song with several disco tropes. It incorporates elements of dance-pop, pop-funk, power pop and space rock, as well as 1970s, 1980s and 1990s pop and R&B styles. "Therefore I Am" is a song by American singer Billie Eilish. The song was written by Eilish and her brother Finneas O'Connell, with production being handled by the latter. It was released as a single by Darkroom and Interscope Records on November 12, 2020. It is an uptempo, hip hop-influenced pop and dark pop track. Eilish said the song is just her joking around. The lyrics are about Eilish not caring about what people think about her.
"We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift for her fourth studio album, Red (2012). Swift co-wrote the song with its producers, Max Martin and Shellback. The song was released as the lead single from Red on August 13, 2012, by Big Machine Records. Its lyrics depict Swift's frustrations at an ex-lover who wants to re-kindle their relationship. The song also appeared on the Australian Singles Chart at number 45.
